Current estimates from the US Department of Statistics suggest that between 10 percent and 20 percent of the population have some type of disability. Adaptive technologies provide these individuals with a gateway to information and education. Legislation in the US, Canada, and internationally reflects the importance of accessible standards for Web-based resource development.
WebCT is committed to the accessibility of our e-Learning platform. Accommodation of learners of all needs helps increase the availability of high quality educational experiences to every individual. Users of WebCT include an increasing number of students with sensory, physical or learning disabilities, who rely on adaptive technologies for a gateway to information and education. WebCT is working with leaders in the accessibility field to ensure that our software complies with both industry standards and federal guidelines for accessibility.
Accessibility Audit
WebCT conducts internal and external accessibility audits of our e-learning platform against both industry standards (e.g. Web Accessibility Initiative Standards - WAIS, W3C) and Section 508 guidelines. WebCT views this to be a critical component of our product development process.
Training Resources
WebCT is committed to expanding our training and education for accessibility issues. All users participating in a WebCT Learning Partnerships Group services training are instructed on the accessibility features of the software. In addition, we have prepared an online resource, Strategies for Accessible Course Design, and have made more specific documentation available in the WebCT Help system.
Continued Vision
WebCT is continuing to research and evaluate additional assistive technology optimization. We are committed to building our software towards the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Accessibility Initiative Standards (WAIS, W3C).
